The most shocking change I made on my weight loss journey
Doing this one thing made a huge difference.
Hello friends!
It’s such a huge relief to have my weight loss journey out in the open. I absolutely can’t stand diet culture and I even hate the word “calories,” so the last thing I wanted to do was feed all of you any of that BS.
But due to a few health-related issues that I share on today’s solo episode of the pod, I recently started working with nutritionist Nicki Parlitis, and the entire process has been so eye-opening. I’m also so grateful for how supportive all of you have been! Opening up about this, especially when health and wellness is my entire job (I wrote two healthy cookbooks!), was completely terrifying.
A couple weeks ago I had Nicki on the pod to share healthy weight loss tips, and this week, I’m opening up about what I have done specifically. I’ve made a few really impactful changes that don’t leave me feeling deprived, but this is probably the biggest and most surprising one:
I eat savory food for breakfast
Yes, you read that right! Your smoothie, croissant, and pastry-loving girl is now someone who eats stir fry for breakfast. 😳
This change shocked me the most because I love my smoothies. I spent years perfecting them—they’re protein-packed, lower in sugar, and way more satiating than most of what I see out there. But the truth is, they just weren’t working for me anymore. Between the avocado, nut butter, and chia seeds, they were super calorie-dense, but they didn’t keep me full. I’d spike and crash, get jittery before lunch, and spend all morning fighting cravings.
Sweet food in the morning sets me up to crave sweets all day. So I said screw it to the idea that breakfast has to look a certain way. Who even decided breakfast was supposed to be a parade of sugary carbs?
Now, I eat real meals in the morning—my prepped chicken and veggie stir-fry, a hearty sweet potato and beef bowl, or a dense bean salad. It’s savory, it’s satisfying, and it completely changed my energy and cravings throughout the day.
And yes, sometimes I’ll have eggs for dinner. Or pancakes for dessert. It’s all just food, and giving myself that freedom has been surprisingly game-changing.
Who decided what qualified as breakfast food, and why was that person obsessed with sugary carbs? I love a veggie scramble, but I cannot do that day after day after day, and I am not a morning person at all. I really like to have my breakfast ready to go when I wake up. So now, I just eat my meal prep for breakfast.
I'll have a chicken veggie stir fry, I'll have my sweet potato beef bowls, I’ll have a dense bean salad. I want it to be savory and hearty and filling. And it has completely changed my energy levels throughout the day—and my cravings.”
The takeaway:
If you find yourself constantly pecking at food throughout the day like I was, take a closer look at your breakfast choices. Try choosing a “dinner” food and eating that for breakfast instead, and watch how it impacts your satiety throughout the day.
