Hello friends!

I’m honestly shook when I think about how much this year has already tested my resilience. Between a recent medical procedure (more on that to come in this space!) and the truly horrific things going on in our country, life has felt really heavy recently.

That’s why I’m so excited to have Sahil Bloom on the pod today. Sahil is a powerhouse of wisdom, distilling complex ideas into life-changing insights that make you smarter, stronger, and more resilient. His newsletter, The Curiosity Chronicle, has nearly a million subscribers (and 135,000 on Substack!), and his new book, The Five Types of Wealth, breaks down exactly how to manage your priorities so you can live the life of your dreams.

In the episode, we focus on the timely topic of how to use micro habits to build resilience so you can handle whatever the world throws at you. We talked about everything from career and relationship-related micro habits to health-related habits. And he has one clear, actionable health tip that I’m absolutely loving:

Walk every day

Sahil says walking is the single best habit you can build, because it’s essentially a life hack for every other area of your life. Here’s why:

🤔 It’s a mental unlock

Walking is a powerful mental unlock because it boosts creativity, enhances problem-solving, and reduces stress. A Stanford study found that walking increases creative output by up to 60% by stimulating divergent thinking. Walking also enhances blood flow and oxygen to the brain, improving cognitive function. Walking also activates the default mode network (DMN)—the brain’s system for introspection and idea generation—allowing for deeper insights and problem-solving.

❤️ It’s a relationship hack

Walking side by side with someone fosters a sense of connection. Studies suggest that when your strides sync up with another person’s, whether it’s your partner’s or a friend’s, it can enhance feelings of closeness and understanding after a conversation. So, if you need to have a tough discussion or want to strengthen your bond with a partner, taking a walk together can be a powerful way to do it.

💪 It’s straight-up great exercise

One of the absolute best ways to build health resilience is to exercise (although we do talk about this more in the episode). And walking is an amazing, easy way to build daily movement into your routine. Walking is accessible, low-impact, and effective for overall health. It improves cardiovascular fitness, strengthens bones and joints, and helps with metabolism and weight management. Walking also reduces stress, boosts mood, and enhances cognitive function by increasing blood flow to the brain.

From this week’s episode:

“Being resilient means understanding what the daily nonnegotiable basics are for making progress, understanding that anything above zero compounds positively in these areas. For anyone, all you really need to focus on is moving your body for 30 minutes a day, eating whole unprocessed foods for 80% of your meals, and getting seven hours of sleep per night. If you can do those three things consistently, you are getting ahead of 90% of people.”

The takeaway:

A few minor lifestyle tweaks, like walking 30 minutes a day, will make an incredible difference in building the resilience you need to handle whatever life throws at you.
