Hello friends!

It’s kind of a dream that my career is spent interviewing world-famous health experts, because the tips I get are incredible. From mind-blowing nutrition hacks (pasta can be a health food, FYI!) to genius tips for longevity, I’m constantly astounded by the advice I get from the experts I interview. And learning about the way they live their lives has truly made my own life better.

But here’s the thing: We don’t all just pop out of the womb as extra-healthy people (I did a bunch of drugs in my 20s, in case you haven’t heard). For most of us, there’s a journey to get there. And this also applies to the guests I have on my podcast, i.e. some of the world’s healthiest people.

Hello, it’s me prior to starting my own health journey.

Many people start a health journey due to a wakeup call. One study found that major life events like becoming a parent or receiving a health diagnosis can serve as "teachable moments" that increase individuals' motivation to start a health journey. Another study found that identity transformation can be the impetus for starting a health journey, something I got into more extensively on Monday’s solo episode of the pod.

To prove this point (or just motivate you!) I asked some of my favorite people—who also happen to be extremely healthy, at least these days—exactly how they started their health journeys. Here’s what they had to say.

A visit to the Seattle Mariners locker room

“I started my journey after a visit to the Seattle Mariners locker room. There, the baseball team had installed new lighting that adjusted in color and intensity. The tech aimed to strengthen the players’ circadian clocks, as well as energize them before games and relax them after. That’s when it clicked for me. Could my inner clocks explain my lifelong struggles? If they were broken, could they be fixed?” — Lynne Peeples, a science journalist and author of The Inner Clock: Living in Sync with Our Circadian Rhythms.
